Unfortunately, I can't use bbcode on the forums, the one python module that can do such a thing is known to be insecure/buggy.

BBCode is a sort of core element for a forum. Could you perhaps code a custom one? Even a basic one just for [b],[i],[u] and [image] would do.

Maybe one for image/url, but the other ones are pretty easy to do...
Also, I should add in a quote button to make quoting easier (and possibly make the text area bigger)
